Steve Jobs unveils iPad 2 - January 11, 2011 by dharkanjhel

The enigmatic 56-year-old co-founder of Apple announced in January he was taking medical leave to deal with health concerns stemming from his bout of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2008.

“We’ve been working on this product for a while and I just didn’t want to miss today,“ Jobs said after entering the stage to a standing ovation.

Looking gaunt in his trademark black skivvy and Levis jeans, Jobs presided over the 75-minute event and showed touches of his snarky side which he directed at the competition.

While the presentation was vintage Jobs, his slow and at times unsteady gait hinted at a physical frailty.

Jobs boasted that the success of the iPad, which had generated $US9.5 billion in revenue in nine months and delivered the company a 90 per cent share of the market, had “flummoxed” the competition.

“Everybody’s got a tablet,” he mocked. “Will it be the year of the copycats?”

He finished with a flourish, standing in front of a giant projection of bisecting street signs: one which read “technology” and the other which read “liberal arts”.

“Our competitors are looking at this like it’s the next PC market,” Jobs said. “That is not the right approach to this. These are post-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive.”

He said the majority of Apple’s revenues now come from these post-PC devices such as the iPad.

The competition Jobs belittled comes from a posse of hardware manufacturers, many of who are using the Android operating system, a rival platform owned by Google.

The first Android device emerged late last year but the real competition is only now popping up on the radar. Motorola, emerged from corporate hibernation with its Xoom tablet, a worthy competitor to iPads 1 and 2.

By the end of the year over a dozen competing tablets will be on sale and market researcher Telstye believes that the competition will shrink Apple’s share of the Australian market from 90 to 60 per cent in a market that is set treble.
