Advocates of conservation and renewable sources such as solar and biomass are split over what sponsors are calling “modest” energy legislation in the belief that even a small start would cause those efforts to snowball.
A bill (HB 7117) that cleared the House Finance and Tax Committee on Wednesday and a similar measure (SB 2094) that’s moving through the Senate wouldn’t set specific goals such as the 20 percent level for renewables by 2020 once envisioned by former Gov. Charlie Crist.
Instead, the

Research will be coordinated through the Energy Technology Partnership, an alliance of 12 independent Scottish universities engaged in energy-related research, development and demonstration. With around 250 faculty members and 700 researchers, it is the largest power and energy research partnership in Europe.
“From wind and solar energy to the potential of wave technology, Scotland is a strong advocate for the advancement of renewable energy,” Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, chief executive of Masdar, said last week at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi in discussing the initiative. “Our countries share a similar vision where new forms of power will complement and help balance the global energy mix.”
Although no specific projects have been defined, the framework of the agreement outlines a detailed action plan to deliver tangible clean energy

Biogas is probably the best kept secret in the renewable energy industry.
Organic waste is one of the untapped sources of natural energy available today. “It’s a simple solution that can be deployed in as quickly as three days but people don’t know too much about it”, says Jonathan de Magalhães, Managing Director of Ubuntu Energy Solutions. While biogas is used all over the world –India for example has more than 4.5 million digesters–harnessing biogas energy in South Africa is practically unknown. Only a small number of digesters have been built successfully and commissioned to date – a loss to the renewable industry sector in the country since biogas fulfils all of the criteria relating to environmental sustainability, requires a relatively low technological input and is cost effective to implement.
Biogas typically refers to the gas which is produced by the biological breakdown of

LONDON – China last year became the largest global investor in renewable energy and is now a leader in the industry, the chief economist of the International Energy Agency said.
Every step that China takes to limit emissions growth is closely examined as China has been a big emitter of greenhouse gases, Dr Fatih Birol told China Daily in an exclusive interview.
“(China’s) per capita emissions are still low, however, compared to most advanced economies,” Birol added.
Birol is tasked with overseeing the World Energy Outlook reports, the Energy Business Council and the organization’s economic analyses of energy and climate change policy.
“Our analysis shows a gap in what global reductions should really be. More should be done, by developed and developing economies alike, respecting the principle of differentiated responsibility,” he said.
In 2009, China voluntarily set a target of

Chu toured a GE-PrimeStar Solar plant in Arvada, Colo., on Nov. 18 that he said was a stellar example of American invention leading to American jobs. Later the same day, he toured the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colo. and spoke to a gathering of NREL and DOE employees.
At PrimeStar, Chu noted that the company adopted technology developed at NREL to build thin film solar panels made of cadmium and telluride. The technology can be more efficient than silicon solar cells and cost much less — because it uses 99 percent less chemical material than more conventional cells.
GE PrimeStar recently announced plans to build a large manufacturing plant in Aurora, Colo., which will employ about 400 people and build enough modules to power 80,000 homes.
Chu said that if the United States balks at helping private firms invest in the most exciting new

Mining companies are gluttons when it comes to energy use as they haul, grind and process ore, but soaring costs and environmental concerns have many turning to cleaner alternatives.
With energy now representing about 25 per cent of production costs, more companies are making huge long-term investments in wind, solar and other renewable energy projects to cut expenses and clean up their operations.
